Making A Monster
Making A Monster

Studies and mockups to create the skeleton of a custom monster, commissioned by a private client. The subject, a werebear, was described as a cross between a grizzly bear, a doberman, a pitbull, and a human man. By studying the structure of each animals, I created a skull upon which to build a face. This step is crucial for later illustrations to be sensical and anatomically appropriate, if fantastical.

Many fantasy races and creatures are based on simple elements. Understanding these materials is key for bringing them to life in an illustration. In this study, I illustrated several rocks and translated the general principles to the hair of an earth genasi, in various color schemes and levels of finish.

Designing Nainn

The design of a character should invoke particular associations with place, emotion, occupation, and more. In designing this arctic-dwelling water genasi, I explored various hair/skin color combinations to create something contrasting but not garish, along with various vitiligo shapes. Many were too cloud-like; mimicking a mosaic of ice upon a lake invoked imagery of a frozen tundra.

A coven of vampires, created for a game of Monsterhearts 2. Each character needed to be interesting and distinct, while also visually communicating certain traits or their position within the coven. "Wolf" uses an excess of bright colors, conveying a chaotic nature, opposite of "Echo"'s pallor and hesitant posing. Anahita uses more warm tones than anyone else, implying a romantic and energetic nature, and Devon's many pointy lines communicate sharpness and aggression.
